Blue whale~ The Largest Animal Ever
The largest animal to have ever lived on Earth, larger than the largest dinosaur, is the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), a marine mammal from the Cetacea order. They migrate thousands of kilometer's across oceans at a speed of 50 km/hr. to feed on planktonic crustaceans rather than being predators like orca whales.
The average blue whale lives for about 80 years, although most of them pass away considerably sooner, frequently as a result of assaults by killer whales. In the chilly waters of the Arctic and Antarctic oceans, whales rely on their thick layers of blubber to keep them warm. Whales don't sleep like other animals do; instead, they take brief naps while floating close to the sea's surface. They are known as blue whales because of the blue colour of their dorsal side. Because of their yellow underbelly, these whales are sometimes known as sulphur bottom whales.
The Blue Whale is thought to have been the biggest mammal to ever inhabit the planet. Females are larger, growing to a height of almost 110 feet and weighing almost 180 tons. The biggest dinosaur grew to be around 22 metres long and weighed about 36 tons. The tongue of a blue whale weighs about 2.7 tons and is so big that 50 people can stand on it. Its mouth is so big that it has the capacity to hold up to 90 tons of food and water at once. However, because of how small its esophagus is, it is unable to swallow anything bigger than a beach ball.
The size of a small car, the heart of a whale is the largest of any animal. Six adults may sit inside, and it weights roughly 600 kg. The aorta of a blue whale measures about 23 cm in diameter, making it big enough for a typical person to crawl inside. It has lungs with a volume of roughly 5,000 liter's. When diving, the oblique diaphragm causes the lungs to collapse, and air is stored in a sizable nasal chamber in the skull. The two blowholes on top of the head that serve as the blue whale's nostrils allow it to breathe in air and exhale it as a spout that may rise up to 30 feet above the water's surface.
The whale's mouth cavity is vast, with roughly 300 one-meter-long baleen plates hanging from the roof. The primary food source for blue whales is tiny plankton, primarily the crustacean krill, of which they can eat up to 6 tons per day. This amount translates to 40 million krill's in numbers. In quest of food, blue whales can dive for up to 50 minutes. To attract krill's to a confined region and subsequently capture them inside of their enormous mouth cavity, they create a circular trap of bubbles. Krill's are confined inside the parallel baleen plates once the water is drained from them, and they are later slowly ingested through the small esophagus.
Juveniles
When a blue whale calf is born, it measures about 7 meters long and weighs about 2.5 tons. It has a daily milk consumption capacity of roughly 500 liter's and gains weight swiftly, gaining about 90 kg daily. It begins consuming krill's after a year and grows to a length of 18 m. Killer whales will hunt calves if they stray too far from their mother while swimming.
Whale Hunting
During the 20th century, blue whales were relentlessly pursued to the point where more than 30,000 whales were killed using modern explosive harpoon guns in a single year. They hunted whales primarily for the oil that could be extracted from their fat, which produced roughly 120 barrels per whale. After 1900, when sophisticated weaponry and trawlers could be used to kill such a massive animal, the whaling business started hunting blue whales on a large scale. When almost 29,000 whales were killed in a single season in 1931, the widespread whale massacre had reached its pinnacle. This caused a rapid and drastic drop in their population. They have now been designated as an endangered and protected species by the International Whaling Commission. There are currently fewer than 10,000 of these enormous animals left in the world's waters.
Whale Evolution
Whales are members of the animal order Cetacea, which also includes killer whales, dolphins, and porpoises. They originated from a group of carnivorous ungulates named Mesonychids 45 million years ago, which adopted an aquatic lifestyle to eat on fish, crabs, and other animals. Their arms gradually changed into flippers, their hind limbs disappeared, and a horizontal tail fluke developed that served as a propeller. Whales' tails move up and down instead of side to side like fish's do. This is due to the fact that a mammal's body bends up and down instead of sideways like a fish or a reptile's does. For the purpose of capturing krill's, the whale's oral cavity changed; teeth were removed, and baleen plates emerged. Sharp teeth, however, continued to be used by killer whales, porpoises, and dolphins to eat fish and other animals.
